"When are you speaking to Haim?" an inquiry reads. "I wanted to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There's just a single issue: The author likewise longs to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're far from alone. A host of celebrated fans have openly begged for the position.

One thing is obvious something is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy nominees.

Similar to the best ensembles, they're a close trio. Their visuals often feature them marching in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such unfettered joy you inevitably think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the biggest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire others to form a group."

"Therefore everyone gets an invitation to be the fourth member of Haim."

Historic Nod

The trio have called into their homes, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the nomination isn't lost on the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant milestone," says Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the pioneers that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The project came out of a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The themes detail breakups and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them working out in real time who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to actively work on ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That developed toughness demanded a different sonic direction – more raw and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The band's honesty shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their personal tales.

Someone broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Path

One can easily sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their place in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an global fan base.

However the band will always be their top priority.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was four," shares Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
