Comeback Daniil Medvedev Wins First Trophy in 882 Days
Nineteen of Medvedev's twenty-one titles have been won on hard surfaces
A comeback Daniil Medvedev claimed his first title for 882 days with success over Corentin Moutet in the tournament final.
Medvedev, a ex- world number one, has experienced a difficult year, managing just one match at the big events and suffering a setback at the New York tournament.
Medvedev's varied form on the ATP Tour - and struggles with his serve in especial - caused him dropping out of the world's top 10 and eventually separating with former coach his previous coach.
Currently training with his coach and Goetzke, Medvedev has steadily improved in the past month - climaxing in a closely contested 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory over Frenchman Corentin Moutet.
This marks Medvedev's first trophy since the Rome competition and maiden on a hard surface from that period of that year.
Success also signifies the Russian has won twenty-one titles at twenty-one distinct competitions.
"This marks the first occasion I have attended a competition with my both daughters at once, so to secure a trophy is particularly special," commented ranked player Medvedev.
"This championship is in honour of my child her name, because the first title I won when my first daughter Alisa was born was for her."
The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had been defeated in his last six title deciders, comprising in Halle earlier this year.
The player's defensive strategy and regular emotional displays on the playing surface had prompted commentators to wonder if his capacity to perform at the top level was over.
But the 29-year-old has altered his approach in recent weeks, attempting to come to the net and play aggressively, reinforced by an improved serving game.
Medvedev came back from a disadvantage in the first set against the challenging Moutet, securing 4 of the concluding five exchanges to gain the advantage.
The competitors traded break points in the second set before Moutet, bidding for his first ATP Tour title, gained dominance to push for a decider.
Moutet defended 4 initial opportunities in a close final set before the champion broke to fifteen to serve for the match.
Appropriately, the winner secured the title with a rally at the net, with Moutet unable to handle a shot after two hours and 38 minutes.
